Xbox 360 Kinect

I had the opportunity today to take a look and play with the 360 Kinect. I have to say it’s not quite what I was expecting.  It’s not just a static sit there and take it all in kind of device.

Upon initial setup, it was recognized and came right online.  It does however have updates already for it, which supposedly fixed a few issues.

My first overall experience and thoughts on it was that it’s laggy.  It doesn’t quite keep up with you as you would think it would.  It also takes a bit of time to set itself up for the optimum viewing angle, not for you, but for it.  It does a scan (vertical) of the room and takes everything in.  It looks to see what’s around and gives the recommended space required as well as how much it would prefer you to have for optimum playing.  It does a decent job of recognizing your hands, legs, etc.  But I’m not sure how it would do with smaller people or in a darker room.

I’m told that the updates fix the lagginess but I’m not convinced.

Game play was fairly decent, it took some getting used to and it’s not quite as easy as you’d think it would be.  You know, it’s your body, you can react better, but no, it’s not that easy.  I think part of it has to do with the lag that’s involved.

Give it a few more years (months maybe even) and the right people with the right algoithms and it’ll be a nice addition to the gaming arena.  If a few things were incorporated with this such as finger sensors on gloves and/or smaller sensors that attach to the legs, shoulders, etc that would help pick up the movements, and this thing could be phenominal.

It definitely brings thoughts of Minority Report to mind, where Tom Cruise was navigating through the computer system and manimpulating pictures with his hands on a virtual screen.  Pair this device with a set of 3D goggles (self contained) and I see the entire 3D immersion gaming experience taking off.

Maybe if we could get Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft to collaborate on something the ultimate FPS gaming system could be created.

What do you think, have you had any experience with the Kinect?  Will you be picking one up?

How about the whole immersive 3D gaming experience, what would you like to see?

Let me know in the comments.
